4. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
5. COURSE GOAL: Exposes the student to the principles of dimensional metrology. Students will learn how to use common measuring instruments relating to state-of-the-art manufacturing environments. Students will also learn the importance of Quality Control, TQM, and SPC processes as they relate to manufacturing environments. Use of a coordinate measuring machine will be delivered.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Technical Competencies:
(A) The student will be exposed to hands on use of geometric dimensioning &
tolerancing metrology methods.
 
(B) The student will be exposed to common measuring tools found in manufacturing.
(C) The student will learn how to operate a coordinate-measuring machine.
(D) The student will perform calibration activities on various measuring instruments.
(E) The student will learn how to collect and record data for SPC documentation.
(F) The student will learn how to verify accuracy of machined parts.
(G) The student will be exposed to ISO standards and requirements.
(H) The student will learn to interpret and report measurement data on databases.
(I) The student will be exposed to other quality standards required in manufacturing.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
Semester grades will be based on the following criteria:
Written Average 25%
Projects 40%
Participation Grade 20%
Subjective Grade 15%

Written Average: Tests, quizzes, worksheets, reports, etc.  All written assignments will be evaluated according to the following scale:

Projects Average: At the end of each semester the assigned projects will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
 
Process Planning 20 points
Complexity 20 points
Accuracy 30 points
Workmanship 30 points
Participation Grade: This course requires everyone to participate.  Everyone is expected to do so constructively everyday!
 
Subjective Grade: At the end of each semester the instructor will submit a grade for each student’s work ethic that will be a reflection of the following:
 
  1. Working habits
  2. Safety habits
  3. Care of tools and equipment
  4. Ability to follow procedures
  5. Teamwork
  6. Attendance

Special Remarks:

1.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

9. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
