COURSE SYLLABUS 1. TITLE OF COURSE: Systems Analysis and Design PREFIX/NUMBER: CIS 268 CREDIT HOURS: 4 2. PREREQUISITE: CIS 115 and 1 programming language 3. RESOURCES NEEDED: TEXT: SUPPLIES: 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introductory systems analysis and design course for computer programmers and systems analysts. The course presents an overview of information systems and the system development life cycle for the systems analyst. Course emphasis will then focus on tools and techniques that the programmer or analyst can use to document information systems. Classical and structured tools for describing data flow, data structure, process flow, file design, input and output designs, and program specifications will be applied to documenting systems. Emphasis will also be placed on the integrated use of the classical and structured tools. Time permitting, the course will survey other important skills for the systems analyst such as data gathering and reporting, project management, and cost/benefit analysis. 5. COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of the course, students will (A) Apply fundamental information systems concepts to an information system problem. (B) Describe and defend the system development life cycle as it applies to a project. (C) Document the overall structure data flow through a person/machine information system for a business problem. (D) Document the requirements and design of computer generated reports. (E) Document the requirements and design traditional computer files (sequential, direct, and indexed) for a system. (F) Define and design the batch inputs and on-line terminal dialogue for a system. (G) Design a friendly terminal dialogue for an on-line system. (H) Document the flow of control (processing steps) in a data processing system. (I) Document computer programming specifications for a system. (J) Organize and present the documentation for a system as a technical report or project. 6. EVALUATION PROCEDURES: Section Exams (5 – 50 points each) 250 points Project 250 points Grading ScaleRaw Score Range Letter Grade 450 - 500 points A 400 - 449 points B 350 - 399 points C 300 - 349 points D < - 349 points F Special Remarks: 1. Attendance: College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings. If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week. Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog. 2. Tardy Policy: A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies. 3. Assignments/Missed Exams: It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments. If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed. Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist. Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion. 7. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities. 8. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor. 9. ADA NOTICE: Students who have a documented disability may be eligible to receive accommodations for this class. Please contact the Disability Resources Center at 549-3446 for further information.
