COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Provides the student with the CWNA version of secure wireless networks.  Offers detailed instruction on the foundation concepts and technologies of wireless data networking.   Upon completion of this course, students are prepared to take the Certified Wireless Network Administrator (CWNP) Certification Exam.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

By the end of the course, students will

  1. Discuss the standards and drafts, and emerging technologies in the wireless LAN industry
  2.       Describe basic LAN & WAN protocols and discuss OSI & LAN basics
  3.       Discuss site surveys and wireless networking design. Describe the appropriate use of wireless networking
  4.       Explain application specific wireless topics/subjects
  5.       Discuss wireless LAN implementation challenges
  6.       Describe hidden node
  7.       Review OSI Layers of a network
  8.       Explain and discuss the physical and MAC layers of the OSI Model including modulation, fragmentation, SIFS/PIF/DIFS/EIFS, authentication, CSMA/CD, roaming and antenna diversity
  9.       Describe filtering
  10.       Demonstrate basic understanding of wireless transmission and concepts
  11.       Describe hardware configuration & implementation including access points, bridges, wireless residential gateways, host connectivity, antennas, cables and connectors
  12.       Explain wireless LAN security
  13.       Discuss advanced encryption standard (AES) and wired equivalent privacy (WEP)

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

The final grade for this course is determined by a combination of exams, quizzes, projects, and homework.  The point value of each assignment will be given to the students by the instructor is a separate handout.

Special Remarks:

1.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
