AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION/TRANSAXLE DIAGNOSIS AND ASSEMBLIES

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Covers diagnosis, principles of hydraulics, principles of electronic components, power flow, theory of operation, removal of transmission/transaxle, tear down, replacement of components, measurement and subsequent adjustment of components and replacement of transmission/transaxle.

COURSE GOAL:

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, students will:

(A)

Identify and interpret transmission concern; assure engine operation; determine necessary action.

 

(B)

Identify components and their function.

 

(C)

Hydraulic Circuitry

 

(D)

Perform pressure tests; determine necessary action.

 

(E)

Perform lock-up converter system tests; determine necessary action.

 

(F)

Diagnose electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, vacuum control system concerns; determine necessary action.

 

(G)

Inspect and test, adjust, repair or replace transmission related electrical and electronic components (includes computers, solenoids, sensors, relays, switches, and harnesses).

 

(H)

Remove and reinstall transmission and torque converter (rear-wheel drive).

 

(I)

Remove and reinstall transaxle and torque converter assembly.

 

(J)

Disassemble, clean, and inspect transmission/transaxle.

 

(K)

Inspect, measure, clean, and replace valve body (includes surfaces and bores, springs, valves, sleeves, retainers, brackets, check-balls, screens, spacers, and gaskets), and torque valve body bolts.

 

(L)

Inspect servo bore, piston, seals, pin, spring, and retainers; determine necessary action.

 

(M)

Inspect accumulator bore, piston, seals, spring, and retainer; determine necessary action.

 

(N)

Assemble transmission/transaxle

 

(O)

Inspect converter flex plate, attaching parts, pilot, pump, drive, and seal areas.

 

(P)

Measure torque converter endplay and check for interference; check stator clutch

 

(Q)

Inspect, measure, and replace oil pump assembly and components.

 

(R)

Check torque converter and transmission cooling system for contamination.  Measure endplay or preload; determine necessary action.

 

(S)

Inspect, measure, and replace thrust washers and bearings.

 

(T)

Inspect oil delivery seal rings, ring grooves, and sealing surface areas.

 

(U)

Inspect bushings; replace as needed.

 

(V)

Inspect and measure planetary gear assembly (includes sun, ring gear, thrust washers, planetary gears, and carrier assembly); replace as needed.

 

(W)

Inspect case bores, passages, bushings, vents, and mating surfaces; determine necessary action.

 

(X)

Inspect transaxle drive, link chains, sprockets, gears, bearings, and bushings; perform necessary action.

 

(Y)

Inspect, measure, repair, adjust or replace transaxle final drive components.

 

(Z)

Inspect and reinstall parking pawl, shaft, spring, and retainer; determine necessary action.

 

(AA)

Inspect clutch drum, piston, check-balls, springs, retainers, seals, and friction and pressure plates; replace as needed.

 

(BB)

Measure clutch pack clearance; adjust as needed.

 

(CC)

Air test operation of clutch and servo assemblies.

 

(DD)

Inspect roller and sprag clutch, races, rollers, sprags, springs, cages, and retainers; replace as needed.

 

(EE)

Inspect bands and drums; adjust or replace as needed.

7.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

(A) There will be a written exam after each unit and a final, during the 7½ week term, during class time, and on announced dates.  All will be weighted equally, except the final will count double.

(B) There may be unannounced “pop” quizzes throughout the 7½  week term, which will also be weighted equally to other exams.

(C) Routine evaluations will be made on an individual basis by the instructor during each lab session.

(D) There will be a lab final (performance) exam.  The score on this exam will be entered twice (doubled) when computing your final grade.

(E) Grading will be weighted--30% of your grade for written assignments, 40% of your grade for lab assignments, 30% of your grade for tests. One grade point value will be deducted from total grade percentage for every hour absent.

Special Remarks:

1.

All announced examinations will be made up of multiple choice, completion and short essay type questions and will be given during regular class periods. Make-up exams will only be given if prior arrangements have been made.

2.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

3.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

4.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
