COURSE SYLLABUS 1. TITLE OF COURSE: SURFACE PREPARATION II PREFIX/NUMBER: ACT 242 CREDIT HOURS: 2 CR. (1L/1.5 LBV) 2. PREREQUISITE: 3. RESOURCES NEEDED: TEXT: Motor Auto Body Repair by Robert Scharff SUPPLIES: 1 spiral notebook, 3 no. 2 pencils, 1 clipboard, work shoes, and basic hand tools 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Emphasizes surface preparation for refinishing including cleaning, sanding, feather edging, chemical treatment of bare metals and priming. The application of primers, including why and where to use them is covered. 5. COURSE GOAL: This course is designed to teach the student the proper blending and paint tinting techniques needed to achieve a successful color match on an automotive finish. 6. COURSE OBJECTIVES: After completion of this course, the student should be able to: (A) Apply two-component finishing filler to minor surface imperfections. (B) Dry or wet sand area to which primer-surfacer has been applied. (C) Dry sand area to which two-component finishing filler has been applied. (D) Remove dust from area to be refinished, including cracks or moldings of adjacent areas. (E) Clean area to be refinished using a final cleaning solution. (F) Remove, with a tack rag, and dust lint particles from the are to be refinished. (G) Apply suitable sealer to the area being refinished when sealing is needed to desirable. (H) Scuff sand to remove nibs or imperfections from sealer. (I) Apply stone chip resistant coating. (J) Restore corrosion-resistant coatings, caulking, and seam sealers to repaired areas. (K) Prepare adjacent panels for blending. 7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES: Each student enrolled in the Automotive Collision program will be graded as follows: Lab skills attitude 1. Lab work consists of: (A) speed (B) accuracy (C) neatness and order (D) care of tools (E) attitude: student work habits, promptness, good attendance, project decision making. The ability to work without constant instruction. Responsibility to any given project or assignment. Laboratory projects will be evaluated on a weekly basis. lab skills 60% written assignments 20% written tests and quizzes 20% Each hour of absence constitutes a deduction of one point from the total final grade. Tardiness will be counted in 15-minute increments. The student will be dropped when he/she misses over 12 hours. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities. 10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.
