COURSE SYLLABUS 1. TITLE OF COURSE: ESTIMATING AND SHOP MANAGEMENT PREFIX/NUMBER: ACT 205 CREDIT HOURS: 3 CR. (2L/1.5 LBV) 2. PREREQUISITE: None 3. RESOURCES NEEDED: TEXT: Motor Auto Body Repair by Robert Scharff SUPPLIES: 1 spiral notebook, 3 no.2 pencils, 1 clipboard, work shoes, and basic hand tools 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Initiates written estimates on damaged vehicles. Students learn shop management including work orders, ordering supplies, operating costs, time cards, shop liabilities, employee’s safety and insurance management issues. 5. COURSE GOAL: The student will gain practical experience in estimating collision damage and shop management techniques. 6. COURSE OBJECTIVES: After completion of this course, the student should be able to: (A) Identify nomenclature using the collision repair manuals. (B) Write an estimate on parts replacement using a collision repair manual. (C) Estimate material and supply costs. (D) Inspect vehicle for collision damage. (E) Fill out owner information on a repair order. (F) Price parts, materials, and labor on a repair order. (G) Identify and dispose of hazardous waste according to Environmental Protection Agency regulations. (H) Identify personnel health and safety hazards according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines. (I) Inspect safety equipment on vehicles for replacement. (J) Identify policies and differences with the different insurance companies. (K) Build a scale model of a shop layout, along with documentation of policies procedures, and types of personnel needed to operate different sizes of shops. (L) Evaluate the procedure of salvage pool as it relates to Insurance Companies and the policies for totaling vehicles that are beyond repair due to cost. 7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES: Each student enrolled in the Automotive Collision program will be graded as follows: Lab skills attitude 1. Lab work consists of: (A) speed (B) accuracy (C) neatness and order (D) care of tools (E) attitude: student work habits, promptness, good attendance, project decision making. The ability to work without constant instruction. Responsibility to any given project or assignment. Laboratory projects will be evaluated on a weekly basis. lab skills 60% written assignments 20% written tests and quizzes 20% Each hour of absence constitutes a deduction of one point from the total final grade. Tardiness will be counted in 15-minute increments. The student will be dropped when he/she misses over 12 hours. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities. 10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.
