COURSE SYLLABUS 1. TITLE OF COURSE: REFINISHING SAFETY PREFIX/NUMBER: ACT 141 CREDIT HOURS: 1 CR. 2. PREREQUISITE: None CO REQUISITE: 3. RESOURCES NEEDED: TEXT: As required SUPPLIES: As required 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Covers correct use of safety procedures used in refinishing. Proper fit and use of various types of protective equipment is emphasized. The identification of tools and equipment, with use and maintenance is covered including national guidelines for proper disposal and handling of hazardous materials. 5. COURSE GOAL: 6. COURSE OBJECTIVES: After completion of this course, the student should be able to: (A) Identify and take necessary precautions with hazardous operations and materials according to federal, state, and local regulations. (B) Identify safety and personal health hazards according to OSHA guidelines and the "Right to Know Law." (C) Inspect spray environment to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, and for safety and cleanliness hazards. (D) Select and use the NIOSH approved personal sanding respirator. Inspect condition and ensure fit and operation. Perform proper maintenance in accordance with OSHA Regulation 1910.134 and applicable state and local regulation. (E) Select and use the NIOSH approved (Fresh Air Make-Up System) personal painting/refinishing respirator system. Perform proper maintenance in accordance with OSHA Regulation 1920.134 and applicable state and local regulation. (F) Select and use the proper personal safety equipment for surface preparation, spray gun and related equipment operations, paint mixing, matching and application, paint defects, and detailing (gloves, suits, hoods, eye and ear protection, etc.). 7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES: Each student enrolled in the Automotive Collision program will be graded as follows: Lab skills attitude 1. Lab work consists of: (A) speed (B) accuracy (C) neatness and order (D) care of tools (E) attitude: student work habits, promptness, good attendance, project decision making. The ability to work without constant instruction. Responsibility to any given project or assignment. Laboratory projects will be evaluated on a weekly basis. Lab Skills 60% Written Assignments 20% Written Tests and Quizzes 20% Each hour of absence constitutes a deduction of one point from the total final grade. Tardiness will be counted in 15-minute increments. The student will be dropped when he/she misses over 12 hours. Attendance: College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings. If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week. Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog. 2. Tardy Policy: A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies. 3. Assignments/Missed Exams: It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments. If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed. Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities. 10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation.
