COURSE SYLLABUS

1.	TITLE OF COURSE:	FIREARMS
	PREFIX/NUMBER:	LEA 108	CREDIT HOURS:	3 CR. (1L/2 LBV)
2.	PREREQUISITE:

	TEXT:	All necessary textbooks are available for loan to students
	SUPPLIES:	Paper, pens, and 3 ring binder
4.	COURSE DESCRIPTION:	Discusses the skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to safely use police firearms. Students will demonstrate skills by firing weapons on a firing range. The student will demonstrate basic safety techniques and will explain the firearms role within the continuum of force.
5.	COURSE GOAL:
	The student will be familiar with:

	(A)	how to handle a firearm in a safe manner
	(B)	how to clean and service a handgun
	(C)	the basic principles of shooting a handgun
	(D)	how to safely and effectively demonstrate using a handgun
	(E)	the firearms role regarding use of force and the importance of "mindset"
	(F)	commonly recognized survival based shooting techniques
	(G)	effective utilization and fire a weapon under dim light conditions
	(H)	qualify with a handgun at a range using the P.O.S.T. approved qualification course

6.	COURSE OBJECTIVES:
	By the end of the course, students will:
	(A)	The student will have an understanding of safety rules as it pertains to handling firearms in all environments. The student will know the 4 rules of firearm safety. An understanding of all safety features on firearms and how to make the weapon safe at home as well as on duty.
	(B)	The student will explain various firearms equipment and alternatives. The student will demonstrate care and cleaning of weapons to include nomenclature, maintenance of weapon and ammunition and field stripping.
	(C)	The student will demonstrate the basic techniques of marksmanship and shooting using a handgun that will include but not be limited to stance, grip, sight picture, trigger manipulation, breath control, recovery and presentation.
	(D)	The student will demonstrate correct loading/reloading and unloading which includes ammunition management, weapon status and malfunctions.
	(E)	The student will demonstrate shooting positions, tactics and shooting under unusual conditions including but not limited to shot placement, cover/concealment, positional shooting, movement shooting, multiple targets, close combat, one hand shooting and reloading and long range shooting.
	(F)	The student will demonstrate techniques and tactics used in dim light shooting such as, non-flashlight techniques, cover/concealment , flashlight techniques and reloading.
	(G)	The student will qualify with a score of 70% or higher utilizing the P.O.S.T. approved handgun tactical course.

7.	EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
	The student will be tested at the end of 64 hours of lecture and practical instruction. Students will take a written exam as well as qualify at a 70% proficiency rate. 75% of the grade will be an average of the final 3 qualification scores. 25% of the grade is based on the written test.

Special Remarks:
1.	Attendance - this course consists of 64 hours training (both lecture and lab). Any absenteeism can result in an official drop from this course.
2.	Unexcused Absence and Tardies - unexcused absences and tardies cannot be made up and can greatly affect your grade and ability to sit for the state certification exam. Any projects, quizzes, tests, or exams due in on the day of an unexcused absence will result in a 0 (zero) for that day.
3.	Excused Absence and Tardies - Excused absences and tardies can be made up and are encouraged to be. Anytime a student elects to make up an excused absence or tardy, he/she may do so but must document this time and have an instructor present to initial it. This includes students who have conflicting or rotating work schedules. Students who miss class due to an excused absence or tardy are responsible for materials covered during their absence. NO exceptions!
4.	Cheating - students caught cheating on any projects, quizzes, tests, or exams will be recommended for expulsion from the academy. Student conduct must represent what is required of the law enforcement community.
5.	Stealing - any student caught stealing any state owned property will be removed from the class roster and law enforcement officials will be notified.

8.	ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
	The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
