SUPPLIES:

Pens, pencils, and 3-1/2" diskettes.
4.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A course designed to help students learn decision-making skills in prioritizing and producing simulated office assignments as an office assistant in mailable form.  Simulated projects are completed in advertising, marketing, accounting, and technical areas.
5.

COURSE GOAL:

To produce mailable computer printouts from straight-copy, rough-draft, and simulated office projects.  To develop the ability to make decisions without direct supervision, using lessons 81-120 in textbook and extra lessons not in the textbook.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the course, students will
(A) continue demonstrating basic keyboarding skills through the use of effective skill development materials and word processing knowledge.
(B) apply keyboarding skill and word processing knowledge to practical on-the-job activities in both specialized and general office areas.
(C) demonstrate a keen sense of responsibility for high-quality keyboarding work.
(D) demonstrate the ability to make decisions regarding the prioritizing of office jobs.
(E) demonstrate keyboarding speed of at least 45 wpm on five-minute timings with a maximum of five errors (95 percent accuracy).
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
A. Production Work from Lessons = 15 percent of final grade
Production jobs from lessons  81-120 will be graded on a point basis:
8 points--mailable with no errors
7 points--mailable with 1-2 minor errors
6 points--mailable with 3-4 minor errors
5 points--mailable with 5-6 minor errors
4 points--mailable with 7-8 errors or nonmailable
0 points--no homework handed in or test(s) not taken
Late homework will be penalized depending on lateness.
Cycles of MAP in GDP will be completed.
B. Additional Exercises = 15 percent of final grade
Additional extra exercises (mail merge, etc.) will be graded for mailability.  Five points will be deducted each day an assignment is late.
C. Production Tests = 35 percent of final grade
A minimum of five production tests will be given throughout the semester. Decisions will have to be made when taking production tests as to style, format, number of copies, envelopes, spelling errors, sentence structure, etc. The same point scale will be used as above in
A. Production Work from Lessons.
D. 5-Minute Timed Writings35 percent of final grade
  Timings are graded according to the following scale.  The average of the student's three fastest timings containing no more than five errors for five minutes will be converted to a grade as follows:
A =      60 wpm and above
B = 55-59 wpm
C = 54-45 wpm
D = 44-40 wpm
F =  39- 0  wpm
(See WPM chart below to obtain a student's grade for timed writings.)

To obtain a student's grade for timed writings, the following procedure is used:

Average the three (3) highest speeds attained with no more than five errors for five minutes. If three timings within the error limit were not attained, zeros are averaged in to replace the number(s) missing. This average score is then converted to a percentage score as follows:

2.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

3.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

8. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
9. ADA NOTICE:
Students who have a documented disability may be eligible to receive accommodations for this class. Please contact the Disability Resources Center at 549-3446 for further information.
