COURSE GOAL:

To develop students’ knowledge of bank operations, and give a solid foundation of banking principles, integrity and ethics.  This course is appropriate for any student, but will be of particular benefit for those interested in banking as a career.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  (A) To provide an overview of bank departments and their functions.
  (B) To provide an overview of basic banking principles.
  (C) To provide an overview of banking integrity and ethics.
  (D) To provide an overview of negotiable instruments.
  (E)

To provide an overview of endorsements.

  (F)

To provide an overview of check clearing.

  (G) To provide an overview of check kiting
  (H) To provide an overview of cash handling.
  (I) To provide an overview of counterfeit currency.
  (J)

To provide an overview of basic loan documentation.

  (K) To provide an overview of bank security.
  (L) To provide an overview of bank audits.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
  Because this class is held one night per week and material for tests is based on lecture notes and video tapes, your attendance is imperative.  You will have tests on key points from each section and one final comprehensive exam.

100% of your grade will be based on the test scores and final exam.

Class Rules:

1.

No food or drinks allowed in classrooms.

2.

There will be a break during the class due to the length of the sessions.

Take good notes.

Ask as many questions as necessary to help you understand the material being covered.

Special Remarks:

1.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

2.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

3.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

8. COURSE OUTLINE
  Tentative Schedule
  The students will spend forty-five class hours in a lecture learning environment as follows:
  I.

An overview of the banking industry, its history, its present, and the possibilities of its future.

  II.

Learning about the different departments in the bank.  Explore how each department functions independently, dependently, and collectively, to operate as a whole.

  III. Learning about ethics in banking, customer confidentiality, employee theft, and illegal activities. 3 hours
  IV. Learning about bank security, robbery procedures, extortion, bomb threats, and fraud. 3.5 hours
  V. Learning about the elements of negotiability and how negotiability is affected by endorsements. 3.5 hours
  VI. Learning about how checks are processed and cleared through the federal reserve system, return item processing and collections. 4 hours
  VII. Learn about check kiting, how kites work, how to detect them and how to stop them. 2 hours
  VIII Learn how to handle a cash drawer, different methods of cash handling, and counterfeits. 3 hours
  IX. Learn how banks must disclose interest rates based on federal regulations. 3 hours
  X. Learn how federal regulations guide deposit holds on checks through Reg CC (Funds availability).  3 hours
  XI.

Learn how the Bank Secrecy Account is used in catching money laundering.  And how we are obligated to report certain transaction to the IRS.

Learn how credit reporting is used in making the loan decisions, and how banks and lending institutions use this information to determine loan rates.

10 METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
  To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
11. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
  The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.
