SUPPLIES:

  Diskettes, paper, and pencils.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Allows students to develop a basic legal terminology background.  Designed for students seeking careers as legal office assistants, paralegals, or attorneys.  Students learn the state, federal, and local court structures.

COURSE GOAL:

To use terminology used in law offices and court systems.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
(A) To spell legal terms.
(B) To define selected legal terms in federal and state court systems.
(C) To use legal terminology used in civil, criminal, domestic, bankruptcy, probate, and domestic cases.
(D) To recognize Latin phrases used in legal settings.
  (E) To introduce students to legalese.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
    WEEKLY TESTS (PCC in Learning Center-FCC in Library)  . . . . . . .     100%
  A.  16 WEEKLY TESTS are 100% of grade.
  B. No final is given in the course;
  C. Evaluations (tests) will shut off Sunday night at midnight. 
  D. Test anytime that is convenient for you during the week before the evaluation shuts off.  Testing takes about 10 minutes.  (Check hours for testing in the Learning Center at Pueblo/Library for FCC students. )
  E. Tests are T-F, M/C, fill-in-the-blank, and matching.
  F. Tests are similar to the practice tests in the text.
  G. Most tests are 25 questions.

Special Remarks:

1.

ATTENDANCE  FOR ALTERNATIVE DELIVERY :  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings. For distance or alternative delivery courses, students must email, call, or take a test the first week of class or you will be dropped for a "no show."

MISSED EXAMS:  It is the student's responsibility, to complete all EVALUATIONS on time.   No retests.  If you did not take a test before the evaluation time expires, you will not be allowed to make up that evaluation unless you contact the instructor with a valid excuse.  Only one test may be given past the cut off time.

4.       WITHDRAWALS:  If you will not complete the class, you must fill out a Withdrawal Form; otherwise, you will receive an F at the end of the semester.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. 9. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
  I. This course repeats the learning format each week using a new list of vocabulary words.
I.

Latin legal words have pronunciation help in book.

II. Paragraphs in the lessons that show how terminology words are used in sentences giving a better definition to the legal term.
III. Self-tests in the book are to prepare for weekly tests.  They are NOT handed in.
IV. Ask instructor through WebCT email for individual help when necessary.
  V. The transcription part of the text is not used.  There are no cassettes.
  VI. Each lesson has two parts--Part A and Part B.  Each weekly test will cover two lessons each lesson having two parts A/B.
  VII. We will not use the transcription tapes mentioned in the text but do READ the transcription sentences.  Those sentences will act as  the "live class lecture."
