COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course offering stresses the use of electronic office machines in the new millennium.  Proper techniques in the use of the telephone are included. The student will practice basic skills such as communication on the phone, internet, email, facsimiles, and memos.  Interviewing and investigative skills and techniques to ascertain information from a business associate for messages or for further communication and tasks will be studied.  The student will experience such things as use of the internet for researching; organizing office procedures and day to day activities; etiquette and use of email and messaging. 

The student will learn to work in electronic calendars; scheduling and accountability.  Customer/client/business relationships will be analyzed.

COURSE GOAL:

To demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices of effective electronic office procedures.  To be able to use electronic equipment comfortably and to adapt to new or unfamiliar equipment. To be able to work in a business office environment effectively with basic skills while adapting to a specific business or company.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

 

A.

This one unit course will consist of a midterm exam (25%) and a comprehensive final exam (25%) covering the textbook as well as hands on procedures.

 

B.

Projects coordinating with the text book will be assigned and evaluated each week for completeness and correctness.  Weekly projects will comprise 50% of the final grade.

Special Remarks:

Students may challenge this course by applying to the Department Chairperson for a test out.  This test must be completed during the first week of the semester with a minimum score of 70 percent in order to qualify for a test out.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20 percent of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, fifteen hours will usually constitute 20 percent of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

2.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

3.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

 

The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.

Student may be dropped if 20% of the class is missed.  It is the students responsibility to drop the class due to lack of attendance, lack of participation or lack of performance.
