COURSE SYLLABUS

1. TITLE OF COURSE: KEYBOARDING APPLICATIONS II
  PREFIX/NUMBER: BTE 103 CREDIT HOURS: 3
2. PREREQUISITE: BTE 102 or ability to key 35 wpm (words per minute) with 95 percent accuracy (without looking at the keys). If you cannot type 35 wpm, BTE 111, Speedbuilding, is recommended.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Student must type a minimum of 35 wpm with five or fewer errors to enter into BTE 103.  (If student cannot type 35 wpm with accuracy and without looking at the keys, student should enroll in BTE 100, BTE 102, or BTE 111.)  Students will develop keyboarding skill with accuracy and speed.  Students will develop skills for formatting and editing business documents in Microsoft Word and textbook lessons. Students will complete lessons 41-80 in textbook.  BTE 103 reinforces basic keyboarding formatting and procedures.  Productivity and decision-making skills are emphasized along with an emphasis on speed and accuracy.

COURSE GOAL:

To develop speed and accuracy using mailability criteria in production of business letters, reports, tables, forms, statistical reports, and memos.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the course, students will learn to
(A) perform intensive accuracy and speed drills (MAP).
(B) keyboard letters, tables, memorandums, and reports through drills and completion of production assignments.
(C) exhibit initiative and judgment in planning the layout and completing production jobs that provide decision-making opportunities.
(D) improve abilities in proofreading, editing, and rules application through constant drill work.
(E) practice safety rules when using computers.
(F)  read and write proofreaders' marks.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
A. Daily Production Work from Lessons = 15 percent of final grade
Daily production assignments are to be keyed outside of class.  Daily homework will be checked at random for accuracy and formatting.  The instructor may request the project be redone before it is marked off in the grade book as SATISFACTORY.

Some homework may be graded using the chart below on the following  point basis to let the student know how the Production Tests will be graded. 

Production Test Grading Scale
(usually 8 points assigned per page)
(some partial page projects may be assigned partial points, i.e., envelope, one paragraph on page 2)

8 pts. =  mailable with no errors
7 pts. =  mailable with 1-2 mailable errors (slight errors)
6 pts. =  mailable with 3-4 mailable errors
5 pts. =  mailable with 5-6 mailable errors
4 pts. =  mailable with 7-8 mailable errors
4 pts. =  if any typo or any nonmailable errors

0 pts. =  no homework handed in or test not taken.

Slight errors would include minor placement errors,  etc.  Uncorrected typos and/or words added or omitted will receive a grade of 50 percent.  Attempted jobs will earn a minimum of 50 percent.

Mailable Errors:
1. Omission of reference initials, enclosure notation, or copy notation
2. Omission of personal title, i.e., Dr. Mr. Miss, Mrs., or Ms., in the inside address and/or salutation
3. Improperly used abbreviation
4. Incorrect punctuation marks for salutation and complimentary closing
5. Improper use of symbols, i.e., # or No. for number, & for and, % for percent
6. Omission of minor punctuation marks
7. Widow and orphan lines, improper word division, incorrect line endings, improper page breaks
 
Nonmailable Errors:
1. Misspelled or misused words, i.e., principal for principle
2. Typographical error
3. Extreme misplacement of document or portion of a document
4. Material omitted, added, or changed that alters the meaning of the document
5. Omission of date, salutation, or complimentary close
6. Omission of necessary punctuation marks
B. Production Tests = 40 percent of final grade
A minimum of five tests will be given each semester.  Production tests will be graded on the 8 point system in Section A above. One major error will automatically give that page only 4 points.  Proofreading is important 
C. Objective Tests = 5 percent of final grade

A minimum of two objective tests will be given each semester.

100% -    90%    =  A
  80%   -  89%    =  B
  70%   -  79%    =  C
  60%   -  69%    =  D
  0%    -   59%    =  F

D. 5-Minute Timed Writings = 40 percent of final grade

 55 wpm and above     =  A
 54 wpm to 50 wpm    =  B
 49 wpm to 40 wpm    =  C
 39 wpm to 30 wpm    =  D
 29 wpm and below is failing.

A minimum of three 5-minute timings containing no more than five errors will be required to qualify for each speed grade.  The highest three scores will be used to compute the timed writing grade.  See the wpm chart that follows to convert the speed to a percentage grade.

Regardless of the final class grade, a minimum speed of  45 wpm with 5 or fewer errors  must be attained before entering Advanced Keyboarding.   If a student does not have a minimum speed of 40 wpm, the student should enroll in Keyboard Speed Building, BTE 111, until 45 wpm with 95% accuracy is achieved.

Special Remarks:

Students may challenge this course by applying to the Department Chairperson for a test out.  This test must be completed during the first week of the semester (first two days of the summer semester) with a minimum score of 70 percent in order to qualify for test out.

Computers will be used to complete assignments and drills in this class.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20 percent of the scheduled class meetings. Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for the tardies.

3.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist.  If the instructor accepts late homework, points will be deducted for lateness.  Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.
