COURSE SYLLABUS

1. TITLE OF COURSE: Payroll Accounting

4. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
5. COURSE GOAL: For students to exhibit a working knowledge of personnel and payroll records.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  By the end of the course, students will
  (A) To demonstrate understanding of personnel and payroll records.
  (B) To demonstrate familiarity with the Fair Labor Standards Act, Social Security Act and other local, state, and federal laws that affect payroll operations and employment practices.
  (C) To do homework assignments in computing wages and salaries and the timekeeping methods used to record time worked.
  (D) To journalize payroll transactions involving salary expense, wages paid, taxes withheld, and employers’ tax liabilities.
  (E) To complete quarterly and yearly payroll forms for employees and employers.
  (F) To exhibit the essential traits of a bookkeeper; payroll clerk; such as, accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness through homework assignments, projects, and periodic tests.
  (G) To demonstrate familiarity with the concepts, procedures, and language of payroll accounting systems.
  (H) To demonstrate a thorough understanding of payroll procedures by completing the payroll project.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
  The evaluation procedures to be used consist of the following:
  1. Tests will be given as necessary.
  2. One analysis test over the payroll project.  (This will be considered as part of the payroll project.)
  3. Occasional collection of daily homework assignments and checking for form, neatness, and accuracy may be used.
4. The final grade will be determined on the basis of a percentage of total points possible on tests, homework assignments, and payroll project.

Special Remarks:
1. Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 6 hours will usually constitute 20% of a two-credit semester course.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.
2. Tardy Policy:  A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence.
3. Missed Exams:  Any student who misses a MAJOR TEST will be allowed to make up that number of points equal to the one major test missed during an unexcused absence.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of quizzes and tests may be allowed.  Late homework papers will not be accepted.
