COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course introduces students to management theories and communication principles emphasizing team management.  The student is introduced to customer service, diversity and disability issues, and provided resources to utilize or enhance these services.  The student will develop a personal or library mission statement.  Other topics include public relations, marketing, budgeting, and library security.

COURSE GOAL:

Students will be introduced to interpersonal and management skills needed to be successfully employed in libraries or media centers.
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the course, students will
(A) Describe common management theories.
(B) Identify the position of the library in the organizational structure.
(C) Determine the difference between leadership and management and when each is appropriate in the work setting.
(D) Show an understanding of the overall function of libraries and their relationship to the clientele they serve.
(E) Recognize the responsibility of the library to serve all segments of the community's population by: 1) Identifying one way to apply the Cultural Diversity Tool kit in the library; 2) Using the ADA Checklist, evaluate a library; 3) Developing one project to reach a minority group in the community.
(F) Develop goals and objectives for operating library and recommend procedures for implementation.
(G) Demonstrate knowledge of problem solving techniques and apply them to the library setting.
(H) Apply ethics in a decision-making situation in the library setting.
(I) Define public relations and marketing.  Apply public relations to a discussion of a library incident.  Create one marketing project.

Special Remarks:

1.

Attendance:  College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings.  If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week.  Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

Discussion Participation: Some assignments require that students respond to hypothetical situations that are posted in Discussion.  These assignments are part of the course work and are graded.

Missed Assignments: It is the student's responsibility to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments.  If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of assignments may be allowed.  Late assignments will receive a 10-point penalty unless extenuating circumstances exist.  Makeup of quizzes is at the instructor's discretion. There are video assignments.  Work with the instructor if it is not possible to view these materials.

9. METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in Discussions and course activities, and complete and submit assignments in a timely manner. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
10. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.
