COURSE SYLLABUS

1. TITLE OF COURSE: Introduction to Library Services
  PREFIX/NUMBER: LTN 101 CREDIT HOURS: 3
2. PREREQUISITE: One semester of keyboarding or demonstrated ability to type 30 words per minute.

SUPPLIES:

Required:  access to a computer; access to a library.

RESOURCES:

Students have access to the online resource of the Pueblo Community College Library.  Students who do not live in Pueblo or Canon City may access these resources by going to the PCC Library Home Page and filling out the online patron registration form.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Introduces libraries and their procedures through research, vocabulary, readings, and assignments.  Identifies current tools such as wikis, blogs, podcasting, interactive web pages, and other online services.  Presents resources for library technicians.

COURSE GOAL:

Provide an overview of libraries, their departments, tools, and techniques.

  6.     COURSE OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, students will demonstrate an accurate understanding of the:

A. Character of libraries in the past and present and place present library practices in a historical context;
B.   Vocabulary of the library field; 
C.   Four types of libraries.
D.   Role of automation in the library; 
E.   Value of offering online databases and ebooks;
F.   Demand for audio and visual downloads; 
G.   Place of Web Pages, Wikis, and Blogs in the library;
H.   Use of pod casting in library services;
I.     Desirability of online reference services;
J.     Place of Text Messaging in the library;
K.    Application of U. S. Copyright Law to the day-to-day operation of a library;
L.     Relationship of library ethics to practice;
M.    Beginning resources available to the library technician;
N.     Roles of practicing library technicians.

7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
The final grade for this course is determined by a combination of exams, quizzes, projects, and homework.  The point value of each assignment will be given to the students by the instructor separately.

MAKE UP POLICY:

1.  Assignments have a due date.  As dates may change, it is imperative that students refer to the course schedule and the announcements regularly.  
2.  When an assignment due date cannot be met, the student will contact the instructor PRIOR to the assignment due date.  The reason the date cannot be met will be presented.  The instructor may or may not accept the reason.  Points may be deducted for a late submission.  Late Quiz assignments will lose 5 points per day.  Other late assignments will lose 1 point per day.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

  The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
