COURSE SYLLABUS

1. TITLE OF COURSE: Introduction to Library Services
  PREFIX/NUMBER: LTN 101 CREDIT HOURS: 2
2. PREREQUISITE: One semester of keyboarding or demonstrated ability to type 30 words per minute.

A computer and Internet access, access to a library.

Required:  access to a computer; access to a library.

RESOURCES:

Students have access to the online resource of the Pueblo Community College Library.  Students who do not live in Pueblo or Canon City may access these resources by going to the PCC Library Home Page and filling out the online patron registration form.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An introduction to libraries and their procedures, tools, and techniques for library processes are emphasized.
5.

COURSE GOAL:

Provide an overview of libraries, their departments, tools, and techniques.

6.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

A.

Compare the role of libraries in the past and present and place present library practices in an historical context

 

B.

Build a vocabulary of library-related terms

 

C.

Learn to identify the different types of libraries.

D.

Demonstrate the ability to use print and online journal indexes
E. Discuss the role automation plays in the library
F. Apply the U.S. Copyright Law to the day-to-day operation of a library
G. Relate library ethics to practice by learning what library ethics are and how they apply when assisting a patron to locate information
H. Identify resources for the library technician -- state libraries, CLiC, Library Lists, digital collections, and the Colorado Resource Center.
I.  Learn what some practicing library technicians do.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
Students will be evaluated on the basis of papers and reports that explain the results of interviews, on line searches, and readings.
Reports will be evaluated using the PCC Writing Rubric

MAKE UP POLICY:

Assignments have a due date.  As dates may change, it is imperative that students refer to the course calendar and the announcements regularly.  When an assignment due date cannot be met, the student will contact the instructor PRIOR to the assignment due date.  The reason the date cannot be met will be presented.  The instructor may or may not accept the reason.  Points may be deducted for a late submission.  Late Quiz assignments will lose 5 points per day.  Other late assignments will lose 1 point per day.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

  The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
