COURSE SYLLABUS

1. TITLE OF COURSE: BASIC READING SKILLS
PREFIX/NUMBER: REA 030 CREDIT HOURS: 2
2. PREREQUISITE: 39 or less on the Accuplacer Reading Test

RESOURCES NEEDED:

 

TEXT:

Building Vocabulary Skills (Blue) or Groundwork for a Better Vocabulary (Dark Red) Townsend Press Vocabulary Workbook.  Check with your instructor before purchasing the vocabulary workbook.
 

SUPPLIES:

Students will be provided with checklists to record daily work.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The student will learn strategies for word attack, vocabulary development, stages of reading, and basic reading comprehension.

COURSE GOAL:

Students will improve decoding ability, vocabulary knowledge, comprehension, and reading rate..
6. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  Students who successfully complete REA 030 will be able to:
  (A) Improve decoding and pronunciation skills.
  (B) Demonstrate improvement in basic vocabulary skills.
  (C) Improve basic reading comprehension skills.
(D) Demonstrate the importance of reading as a process.
7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
  2 – 4 initial assessments are required to help identify specific instructional goals for students.  Similarly, post-testing is required to determine competency levels attained.

Special Remarks:

A.

Some students may need more than one semester of work in REA 030 before going on to REA 060.  There is no penalty for enrolling in REA 030 more than one time.  Students who attain an Accuplacer Reading Score of 40  before advancing to REA 060.

B.

Attendance/Promptness/Use of Full Class Time:  Students are expected to maintain good attendance, arrive on time, and stay for the full class time.  Instructors will monitor and evaluate students' use of time management skills as a part of their grade.  Students must withdraw if they are unable or unwilling to complete the course.  Instructors may initiate withdrawal from enrollment for students who miss 20% of the scheduled meetings.:  Students may be dropped from enrollment when they are absent for 20% or more of the scheduled class meetings.

Assignments/Missed Exams:  It is the student’s responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments, quizzes, and tests.  The computer-assisted instruction component of this course must be completed on campus in approved settings.  Individual instructors may set their own policies for make-up work and missed tests.

D.

Food and drink are not allowed in computer labs and classrooms.

E.

Pagers & Cell Phones:  Any communication apparatus brought into class must be set so that it does not make sound.  Students must leave the room to make phone calls.

 

Personal Stereos:  Please do not bring personal stereos for use during reading class.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

 

Instructors will work closely with enrollees in REA 030 to provide individualized instruction appropriate to the students' needs.  Individualized instruction will focus primarily on computer-assisted instruction and vocabulary practice.  Supplementary tutoring is highly recommended for all REA 030 students.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:

 

The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor.
