COURSE SYLLABUS

4.	COURSE DESCRIPTION:	Surveys the history and evolution of drama from Ancient Greece to the Renaissance, emphasizing all aspects of the art form from period values to analysis of dramatic literature and performance.

6.	COURSE OBJECTIVES:
	The Student Should Be Able To:
	(I)	Discover the potential for learning, enjoyment, and personal growth in the theatre experience through a knowledge and appreciation of:
		a)	the importance of theatrical movements, practices, and forms as expressions of social concerns throughout the ages;
		b)	the relationship of dramatic themes, characters, conflicts, and their resolutions to daily life;
			the significance of the ongoing tradition of theatre as a synthesis of the arts; and therefore,
				Approach a theatrical event both comfortably and knowledgeably as a responsive and responsible audience member or active participant.

7.	EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
	In addition to traditional methods of testing, research papers, and discussion, and based upon what the student has learned in the course, he/she will also be asked to:
	1.	do a creative project, such as
		a.	write a short play or scene
		b.	design and build a model
		c.	direct or act in a scene from a legitimate play
	2.	attend and critique two live theatre performances
	3.	read, research, analyze, and translate the play to performance

			90 to 100	A
			80 to 89	B

Special Remarks:
1.	Cheating: If cheating occurs, it will end in a zero for that exam.
2.	Attendance: Students will be dropped when they have missed 20% of total class hours unless arrangements have been made. Unless prior arrangements have been made, missed exams will result in a zero for that exam.
3.	Theatre is discipline. Please be on time for all classes. Excessive tardiness may result in dropping your grade one letter grade.

9.	METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:
	To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
10.	ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:
	The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity.
