COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Studies the various periods of music history with regard to the composers, aesthetics, forms, and genres of each period. Considers music from the Middle Ages through the Classical periods.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The Student Should Be Able To:

1.

Define the following basic elements of music and demonstrate the ability to recognize their use in a musical composition: melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, meter, dynamics, and timbre.

2. Identify the instruments of the orchestra by sight and sound; identify various vocal ranges by sound.

3.

Define and recognize genres of musical composition.

4.

Illustrate a knowledge of various musical forms and identify the various genres with which they are associated, specifically: plainchant, motet, madrigal, fugue, sonata form, rondo, theme and variation, recitative, aria, passacaglia (and its relatives).

5.

Characterize and identify the music of the following eras: Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical.

6.

Evaluate the effects of the religious, social and political climate of each period on the music produced in the period.

7.

Recognize the similarities in the various arts of specific periods.

8. Recall the most important and representative composers from each musical period, and be able to list their most significant compositions and achievements.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:

Tests:
Should include objective, essay, and listening sections. Listening sections could include recognition of standard works or recognition of period and possible composer.
Projects:
Could include research papers on any related topic, concert reviews, or in-class performances. For music students in class, compositions illustrating various stylistic traits or musical elements could be written and performed.
Attendance at live performances should be encouraged if not required.

Special Remarks:

Attendance: College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings unless arrangements have been made. If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week. Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog.

Tardy Policy: A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies.

3.

Assignments/Missed Exams: It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments. If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed. Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist. Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:

To be successful in this course, students are expected to participate in discussions, readings, in-class writing, and peer review activities. The instructor may assign point values to such activities.
