COURSE SYLLABUS 1. TITLE OF COURSE: DRAWING I PREFIX/NUMBER: ART 121 CREDIT HOURS: 3 2. PREREQUISITE: NONE 3. RESOURCES NEEDED: TEXT: None SUPPLIES: Pencils (6B, 4B, 2B, 2H, 3H, 4H), plastic slipcovers, typing paper, kneaded eraser, ruler, and large all purpose drawing pad. 4. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an investigation of various approaches and media designed to develop drawing skills and visual awareness. 5. COURSE GOAL: Upon the completion of this course the student will have draw and rendered a five (minimum) object still life using correct proportions, accurate perspective, and realistic shading which will be properly matted and framed according to department standards. 6. COURSE OBJECTIVES: By the end of the course, students will (A) Analyze through drawing how proportion, perspective, and perception provide the foundation for constructive rendering. (B) Define, describe, and utilize proportion as a drawing aid for size relationships and as a visual design element. (C) Define, describe, and utilize spatial and linear perspective in your drawings. (D) Demonstrate a visual understanding of the similarities and differences of the basic shading techniques used in drawing. (E) Demonstrate an increased perceptual awareness of objects, texture, composition, and the effects of light and shadow by drawing what he/she sees. (F) Define, describe, and utilize the elements of composition in a final drawing using five different objects and three different textures. 7. EVALUATION PROCEDURES: Drawing I is a studio class, which emphasizes mastery of the basic drawing skills, techniques and professional attitudes. The class is divided into 5 modules, the notebook, and the final projects. At the end of each module there will be a mastery test, which will be worth 10 points toward the overall grade. If the student is not satisfied with the grade received on a mastery test, the student may retake the test on that module, on their own time during the course, and the higher of the two grades will be accepted. All work must be turned in on time to receive full credit! The notebook must be complete and professional enough to be an adjunct to a comprehensive portfolio. The final will consist of two drawings, one of which must be matted and framed by the student, while the other simply needs to be matted - minimum size for both is 16"X 20". The student should plan on having one of the works for entry and display in the Student Art Show. Evaluation - Module projects will count for 10 points each towards the final course grade. A completed notebook will count 30 points and the final drawings will count 20 points each. Attendance: College policy states that students may be dropped from enrollment when absent 20% of the scheduled class meetings. If enrolled from the beginning of the term, 15 hours will usually constitute 20% of a four-credit semester course which meets five hours per week. Reinstatement procedures are described in the PCC catalog. 2. Tardy Policy: A student who is late three times (enters classroom after the instructor has taken roll) will be charged with one full absence unless the student can provide valid reasons for one or more of these tardies. 3. Assignments/Missed Exams: It is the student's responsibility, whether present or absent, to obtain all material presented and to complete all course assignments. If prior arrangements are made or extenuating circumstances exist, makeup of tests may be allowed. Late homework papers will not be accepted unless those same extenuating circumstances exist. Makeup of quizzes is to be at the instructor's discretion. Any Work delivered after the final will not be considered unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor. 8. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The very nature of higher education requires that students adhere to accepted standards of academic integrity. Therefore, Pueblo Community College has adopted a policy of academic conduct as described in the Student Handbook. Violation of academic integrity may be defined to include the following: cheating, plagiarism, falsification and fabrication, abuse of academic materials, complicity in academic dishonesty, and personal misrepresentation. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of the behaviors that constitute academic dishonesty. Sanctions for violating the standards of academic integrity may include warning, probation, suspension, and/or failure of the course or assignment at the discretion of the instructor. 9.
