Becoming a Successful Distance Learner
Work/Study Habits are priority #1:
Distance Learning classes are convenient and flexible, but students have to be disciplined enough to make the time necessary to study and participate in their course.
Successful Distance Learning students:
-
Log in regularly to their classes; at least three times per week
-
Arrange / Plan enough time to ensure the completion of study and assignments
-
Take notes
-
Commit a minimum of 6 - 9 hours per week for each three credit hour class
-
Must enjoy communicating in writing and reading the writing of others
-
Be able to work with others via email and chat tools as required to complete projects
-
"Speak up" to the instructors when problems arise
Interactions are often an essential element of the learning experience. Be open and willing to share your ideas remembering to be careful with your responses to others, and be prepared to have your ideas challenged!
Skills:
The instructor cannot see their students and has no way of knowing if you are confused, bored, or frustrated unless you are willing to talk to her/him about it.
Successful Distance Learning students:
-
Know how to use technology properly thus getting the full benefit out of your course. Utilize WebCT tutorials which will provide you with help on your computer skills and information about WebCT.
-
Read and write well. If you have a weakness in these areas get some remedial help or consider starting off with classroom learning.
-
Be comfortable addressing problems from a distance. Distance Learning students need to be assertive in order to make their individual needs, or problems, known.
-
Have and practice good time management skills in setting and following a schedule for finishing readings and assignments.
-
Have and utilize solid research skills - including using the Internet effectively
-
Have the ability to work well cooperatively, even when your communication is restricted to either email or online chat
-
Be flexible and adaptable
-
Distance Learning is an adventure that will expose you to some entirely new - and not always comfortable - experiences and situations. The ability to be flexible and to remain open-minded is critical to having a positive experience as you move into uncharted territory.
Individual Learning Styles:
Online learning is best for those who learn by reading and writing. If you feel that you learn better by hearing lecturing, face-to-face with the instructor, or making presentations an on-campus class might be a better fit.
