Construction began in the summer of 2000, and the permanent campus opened for the start of the fall semester on Aug. 27, 2001. It operated under the direction of Dr. Mary Griffith, who in July 1999 had been named PCC’s Vice President for what then was called the Fremont County Center. Official dedication ceremonies for the Fremont Campus were held on Nov. 2, 2001. The campus contains classrooms, laboratories, a library and administrative offices; importantly, the classrooms are interactive and can be linked to remote sites.
Over the years, the Canon City branch has undergone a number of name changes, some of them very slight. In 1986, it was renamed the Canon City Center. In 1993, it became the Fremont County Center. Later, it was called the Fremont County Campus before getting its current title -- Fremont Campus – when the new building opened its doors. All the while, it has served students from Fremont and Custer counties.
