Frequently Asked Questions

PCC Collage

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. When are the GED labs open for students?

We have a morning lab, from 8:00 am until 12:30 pm, Monday through Friday. We also have an afternoon lab, from 12:00 until 6:00 pm, also Monday through Friday. For students who have daytime jobs, we offer evening classes from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

  2. Do I have to come all those hours?

No. However, you must commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week.

  3. How long will it take me to earn my GED?

That will vary because of many factors. The GED pretest will provide us with information about your strengths and weaknesses. Students who score fairly high usually finish the instructional portion within several weeks. Others may take longer. Much also depends upon the student’s determination and drive to pass the GED.

  4. Do the teachers do a lot of talking, using the white board?

No. Teacher talk is minimized in the classroom. More attention is paid to helping you show progress while you are in class. The teacher is there for guidance, for clarification, and for making you ready for the GED.

  5. Are the classes large?

No. We have a limit of 15 students to a classroom. Rarely are they that full.

  6. Do I have to stay for the entire semester if I don’t need to?

No. The teachers give you progress tests about every 30 hours of class-time in order to determine your readiness. If you show that you can pass the GED after 2 or 3 weeks of instruction, you can take the GED test at that time.

  7. What is the “Prescriptive Learning Plan” that you use?

The “Prescriptive Learning Plan” starts with the GED pre-test. The coordinator and the teachers then organize an individual instructional plan based on that pre-test. That plan is used to “prescribe” the shortest possible instructional strategy you need to pass the GED.

  8. What is “Math Clustering” and how does that help me?

“Math Clustering” is a strategy that we use to help students study only the math that is absolutely necessary to pass the GED test. We have identified 10-11 “clusters” of math that students must know to pass the GED. All other math is not studied, which cuts down the time the student needs to pass the math portion of the GED.

  9. How old do I need to be to sign up?

    17 Years old.

  10. What do I need to bring to sign up?

A picture ID showing proof of age.

  11. Can I find GED assignments in the Internet that would help me?

Yes and No. There have been some good assignments published on the Internet. However, for every one good assignment, there are over 100 which are very poorly constructed. It is recommended that you use the assigned materials in the lab.

  12. Can I do homework?

Yes. If you are not overwhelmed with work and other responsibilities, we can and do recommend assignments that can supplement your classroom work.

  13. Where are the labs held?

On the PCC Pueblo campus - phone: (719) 549-3143

  14. Why should I get my GED?

  15. The workplace is moving toward a greater emphasis on higher education. Many good jobs require a two year degree, but most companies are looking for people with at least a high school diploma or the GED certificate.

  16. Are there other helpful website that I can visit?

Yes.  South Central BOCESColorado Department of Education, and Public Broadcasting (PBS)
