Mr. Frank S. Hoag Honored
July 8, 1988

By Viana Kelly, Marketing

PCC faculty, staff and students, and friends and family of Mr. Frank S. Hoag, Jr. gathered on campus on July 8, 1988, for the dedication of Hoag Plaza. Dr. Zeiss was master of ceremonies for the dedication which-began with platform presentations, Emmett O'Leary singing the PJC "song", set to the tune of "When it's springtime in the Rockies", and the unveiling of a relief of Mr. Hoag. After the presentations, everyone stayed for an old-fashioned ice cream social.

Dr. Zeiss' remarks were:

"In the stream of human endeavors and in the course of personal relationships, there are always a few unique individuals who stand above the rest. There are always a few individuals who give more of themselves than seems possible to their community and their fellowman. These individuals, I submit, are the ones who will always be fondly remembered for their selfless contributions, the ones to whom society should be forever grateful; and the one on whom God smiles.

Today it is my great pleasure to honor one of these unique individuals - Mr. Frank S. Hoag, Jr., "Bud" to most of us. Mr. Hoag's contributions to this community and this state are widely known. Indeed, this very institution and this campus are a manifestation and testament of his work. Exactly 55 years and 10 days ago, Mr. Hoag along with C.N. Caldwell, A. J. Dooner, E. T. Kelly, Hattie A. Mead, Margaret D. Peterson, and J. Arthur Phelps met to form an organization which later established the Pueblo Junior College District. It was during this meeting that Mr. Hoag was elected as the first Chairman of the board for the district. On July 21, 1933, the College was incorporated as Southern Colorado Junior College and the cost was $180 per year for a full-time student. Exactly 53 years ago today, July 8, 1935, the Pueblo Junior College district was formed.

Mr. Hoag continued as Chairman of the Board until 1948 when he "requested a well-deserved leave." Today, he is still active as a member of the board of Directors for the PCC Foundation and he and his wonderful wife, Leverta, continue to support the college 100 percent.

It gives me great pleasure to officially dedicate the Hoag Plaza for time immemorial."
