History of the Health Sciences Building

Cuthbertson Hall dormitory (now the Health Sciences Building)

Cuthbertson HallIt had been hoped that the new dormitory, in process of construction during the previous year, would be ready for student occupancy in the fall of '55. During the summer, students had signed up for rooms. Because they were not ready to move into in September, it became necessary to make emergency arrangements to house men students at the Y.M.C.A. and the women students would have to occupy again the residence on the campus which was ultimately to become a music studio building.

By November men students as well as women students were living in the new dormitory, which had problems as indicated by the following excerpt from the Board minutes of November 10, 1955:

"Dormitory problems brought up by Mr. Knudson were discussed. The laundry problem for dormitory sheets and pillow cases was decided by asking that Mr. Knudson use whatever of the local laundries he wished for this purpose. It was agreed that an automatic washer be installed in boys' and girls' basement by Mr. Mathis. These machines would be coin-operated and would return no profit to the College nor would the College own the machines."

On the same date the Board voted to name the new dormitory Cuthbertson Hall, honoring Miss Lulu Cuthbertson who, in the fall of 1955, had retired from many years of pioneering service. "Also it was decided that open house be held at the dormitory during Christmas vacation, Mr. Valantine and Mr. Knudson are to work together to plan the open house and dedication ceremonies."

The dormitory was constructed with funds from the sale of revenue bonds, which were to be retired.with funds from the post-war building mill levy and revenue from the rental of rooms. It provided for 40 boys and 40 girls with a single supervisor. The building was partitioned in the center, assuring the separation of quarters and with separate entrances. The marketing of these revenue bonds was in great contrast to the sale of the 1939 revenue bonds. The interest rate was low and they were sold at par.
