 GENERAL SUMMARY

Job duties performed by the Academic/Retention Advisor focus on retaining program participants through graduation or transfer and improving their academic performance by providing resources and supporting them to overcome barriers to their academic success.  Counsel and advise students from low-income backgrounds, from families without college experience, and/or students with disabilities. Develop and monitor students’ semester academic progression. Assist students with the completion of financial aid applications, communicating with financial aid staff and performing scholarship searches.  Update and maintain student files (hard copy files and electronic database records).  Develop and implement student development workshops and cultural events.  Participate in professional development trainings, conferences, workshops and college committees.  Some evening/weekend hours are required. Some in-state and out-of-state travel required. Other duties as assigned.

 

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1.      Deliver year round academic advisement and retention of Student Support Services (SSS) participants to include monitoring student progress, needs assessment and goal setting. 

2.      Provide career, financial aid, and transfer counseling to students enrolled in the program. 

3.      Work with the Director to recruit, interview, evaluate and select students for the SSS program. 

4.      Assess the needs of SSS participants and design individualized education plans.

5.      Monitor the academic progress and grades of SSS participants. Track students’ academic progress and advise of resources available when students are not meeting academic goals.

6.      Maintain documentation of all advising and counseling sessions.

7.       Provide workshops, seminars,  and needs assessments to determine the students strengths  and weaknesses .  Plan and organize educational and cultural events for program participants.

8.      Coordinate a yearly financial aid renewal workshop.

9.      Consult with faculty, Financial Aid, Admissions, SSS staff, and Counseling on behalf of Project participants.

10.  Coordinate SSS orientation for new and returning participants.

11.  Attend SSS student functions.

12.   Participate in both college committees, activities as assigned, and in professional organizations (i.e.: TAP (TRiO Alliance of Pueblo), ASPIRE (Association of Special Programs in Region Eight)).

13.   Contribute to annual performance reports to the Department of Education on student success, persistence, retention and graduation.

14.   This position requires some travel and work in the evenings and on the weekends.  Personnel must be able to work these hours and be willing to travel in order to be considered for this position.

15.  Other duties as assigned to support the grant and the College.

 

 

OUALIFlCATIONS

1.      Bachelor’s degree and one year with working with disadvantaged students.

2.      Preferred Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work or related field.

3.      Preferred experience in an educational setting, knowledge of the higher educational system, financial aid programs, and student retention programs.

4.      Superior oral/written communication skills and excellent organization skills required.

5.      Proficient in various computer applications to include Microsoft’s Office Suite.

6.      Insure confidentiality in accordance with FERPA guidelines.

7.       Possession of, or ability to obtain, a current Colorado State Driver’s License.

8.      Experience as a member of a collaborative team.

9.      Experience working in an environment that included diverse individuals.

10.  Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to successfully relate to diverse students.

11.  Background similar to Project participants is preferred.  

 

 

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening and background check as a condition of hire.

Starting Salary Range:   $34,500 dependent upon position, experience, education & funding
