Job Description
Nature and Scope of Work:
The student resource specialist is responsible for providing a broad range of services in support of students enrolled in the Gateway to College program. Incumbent initiates student contact to ensure student success within program, provides career, vocational, program admissions advising, and provides counseling on attendance participation, behavioral issues relating to program involvement. This position will be knowledgeable about and/or able to research and evaluate available community services in assisting students to remove barriers. Incumbent will assist in the development and implementation of recruitment and retention strategies. Designs and delivers workshops, small training sessions, and instructs classes for college credit. Incumbent in this classification works independently at an assigned campus or remote site.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Academic, Career and Vocational Advising
- Advises students on program requirements.
- Develops academic goals.
- Evaluates student’s academic history and education, including transcript evaluation.
- Introduces students to resources available throughout the college.
- Assist students in career exploration.
Program Recruitment and Marketing
- Creates brochures, orientation materials, forms, and documents for distribution and/or presentation.
- Makes presentations to schools, community organizations, churches, and other groups to explain program.
Student Retention
- Work collaboratively with program faculty and department chair to ensure student success and retention.
- Develop strategies for student retention
- Works collaboratively with other departments to facilitate and address student and program needs.
- Develops, facilitates, and delivers classroom instruction on various topics such as time management, study strategies, goal setting, learning styles, career planning, and communication skills.
Student Support Services
- Teaches appropriate college credit classes for student success.
- Provides support for students experiencing family, personal, or economic crises, which may affect school performance.
- Helps student access needed counseling services, support networks, community health, or housing services. Consults with a variety of social service agencies in the community to explain program requirements or address individual student progress or needs. Coordinates activities to introduce students to available community services and campus resources. Facilitates orientation meetings.
Recordkeeping and Reporting requirements:
- Maintains accurate and active student records and documentation.
- Ensures confidentiality is maintained.
- Maintains statistical information and summary information in reports as needed.
- Submits required paperwork according to specified timelines.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Master’s degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling, preferably School Counseling or related field or submit a written plan that documents successful completion of a Master’s degree by June 1, 2009. Demonstrated experience working in an educational environment. Demonstrated experience working with at-risk, drop-out and culturally diverse populations. Experience working with students or clients in advising and developing goals. Experience assessing student needs and coordinating educational and community-based services. Experience in teaching high school equivalency courses or college classes for credit. Experience managing student records or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Demonstrated skills in making public presentations and training diverse groups.
Preferred: Two years teaching experience with young adults (preferably in high school or community college setting). Two years experience working with at-risk youth ages 16-20. Two years experience working in an academic environment, preferably alternative education. Three years demonstrated experience working with diverse populations (e.g., cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, gender, sexual orientation, religious, etc.). One-year experience with academic advising in a high school or college setting. Demonstrated competency in organizing data, maintaining files, and preparing reports. Demonstrated effective communication skills, including an ability to effectively communicate orally and in written form, both in public presentations and one-to-one. Includes ability to maintain a professional demeanor during emotionally charged situations and to explain policies and procedures, rules, and regulations in a non-threatening manner. Demonstrated ability to effectively solve problems and resolve conflicts. Demonstrated effective classroom management skills with young adults. Demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate and collaborate with multiple groups and prioritize multiple projects. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of a team. Computer skills (MS Office, Internet, Banner, Access, Excel, PowerPoint). Knowledge of local high school graduation requirements. Knowledge of local social service agencies and other resources.
LOCATION: Pueblo Campus
STARTING SALARY: In the mid to upper $30’s based on education and experience in accordance with college policy. This is a 12-month position.

SELECTION PROCESS: Preliminary screening will be made on the basis of completed application package submitted by candidate. Completed application package includes: letter of interest detailing experience as related to the position, PCC Application for Exempt Employment, resume, and an unofficial copy of college/university transcripts. If hired, official college transcripts will be required. The screening committee for interviews will invite selected applicants. All application materials become the property of Pueblo Community College and cannot be copied.
